How to Get Jobs and Opportunities to Chase You
A 4-step road map to attract on LinkedIn

Dear Legend,
This is going to be a jam packed letter. I will share how to build a presence on LinkedIn to change your life, the spotlight effect, and also a special program from a kidnap for ransom negotiator on how to thrive under pressure (he gave YOU, readers of Legend Letters an exclusive 25% discount to this program!) Ok, I’m getting ahead of myself.
LFG! 👇🏽
When I told my story of being laid-off three years ago, I had many people reach out to me. They told me their own stories; some of their own experiences, some asking me for advice on what they should do. And I’d always think of this phrase but never said it outloud. Can you guess what I wanted to say? This 👇🏽
Build a presence on LinkedIn, and you should have started a year ago.
The truth is none of the opportunities I’ve had would have happened if I didn’t invest time on LinkedIn and built a presence. And I wish everyone would do that so people wouldn’t have to go through the trauma of getting let go and frantically looking for a new job, or even just opting to leave a toxic work environment and having to start the search process from zero.
Let me ask you this: If you lost your job tomorrow, will you have 25 offers in your inbox the next day?
If the answer is no, you might want to read the rest of this letter.
Let me tell you about someone who knows the journey of going from zero to hero on LinkedIn better than most: Jasmin Alić (Jay).
A few weeks ago, I had an honest conversation with Jasmin.
Can anyone “win” on LinkedIn? What are the steps to having a presence?
You may know Jay as the LinkedIn coach, but his story starts with rap battles, Blackberry phones, and a career pivot fueled by heartbreak. Jay didn’t just study LinkedIn, he rewrote the playbook by leading with generosity, relationship, and authenticity. He has more than 300,000 followers on LinkedIn, and has worked with thousands of people to build their LinkedIn presence.
I know what you’re thinking though.
“What if people judge me?”
“What if I mess up?”
“What if I sound stupid?”
Let me stop you right there! Know this, ❤️ visibility isn’t vanity—it’s service. People aren’t judging you. They’re not even thinking about you. That’s The Spotlight Effect at play (we’ll go more into this at the end of the letter). We all think the world is watching, but most people are too busy worrying about themselves.
The ones who do judge you? They’re not your clients. They’re not your future fans. And they’re certainly not in a better spot than you are.
So let them judge. Jay says this “Most people aren’t afraid of speaking, they’re afraid of being seen.”
But if you never let yourself be seen…how will the right people ever find you? If you hide from your future fans, you become the best kept secret of you company.
So the big mindset shift you need to have is that 🧠 visibility is not performance, it’s permission. (LinkedIn is not TikTok, Instagram, or Facebook, it’s professionals engaging with one another about business: so NO, there is NO NEED to dance or do silly videos!)
What was I writing about again? (Gosh, my 2 second TikTok brain took over.) Right 👉🏽 visibility is permission.
Permission for others to raise their hand.
Permission for someone to say: “Finally… someone who gets me.”
Permission for your future clients to trust you.
You don’t need to perform. You just need to show up consistently.
You ready for some actionable tips? (I know I am!)
Here is how you can get started on LinkedIn (even if it feels awkward).
🧰 The 4-Step Beginner LinkedIn System:
1. Comment before you post
Think of commenting like doing push-ups before the big lift.
It’s low pressure. It builds your writing muscle. And it builds visibility in the communities you care about.
“Commenting is posting,” Jay says. “You’re still writing. You’re still building your voice.”
Start by commenting daily for a month. Focus on these 4 groups:
Colleagues/Competitors (build visibility in your niche)
Ideal Clients/ Ideal Company Leaders (Future customers or employers)
Big Accounts (interact with thought-leaders you admire)
LinkedIn Buddies (find accounts with similar follower size)
2. Write your re/intro post
Most people are obsessed with tactics, hooks, CTAs… but here’s what gets real traction?
An honest post about who you are and why you’re here.
Tell people what you stand for. What you love. Who you want to serve.
“Don’t be afraid to speak from the heart,” Jay says. “People connect to emotion more than strategy.”
3. Treat LinkedIn like a part-time job for 6 months
It’s not about going viral. It’s about being top-of-mind every single week.
“Most people don’t fail on LinkedIn,” he says. “They quit too soon.”
Consistency is the currency. Play the long game.
4. Build a warm funnel (no pitch-slapping!)
The goal isn’t to cold pitch strangers. It’s to create so much value that people ask to work with you.
But when you do reach out, do it with warmth:
Comment first
Engage with their ideas
Then reach out with context and care
“Human first. Sales second,” Jay says. “That’s what works.” And this is how you go about selling a service and looking for a job. See it as a relationship building tool.
So the big question is… are you going to start? (If you are ready and want to put together your LinkedIn strategy, I got you.)
Jay shared so much knowledge in our conversation (Here are the top 10 quotes I shared on LinkedIn that will teach you more than any course.)
(If you want more, Jay shared for the first time in any podcast his real reason for starting on LinkedIn and why he left the world of rap on the Legend Effect podcast, listen to the podcast episode on Apple, Spotify or on the web.)
This week, for our influence psychology lesson:
The Spotlight Effect
You think everyone’s watching.
You think they noticed your typo, your nervous pause, or your awkward sign-off. But here’s the truth: they didn’t.
This is the Spotlight Effect—a psychological phenomenon where we overestimate how much others notice or care about what we do.
Why does this happen? (I’m so glad you asked!)
It’s because we live inside our own heads. We’re the main character in our own lives, so we assume everyone else must be noticing our every move too.
But they’re not. Because they’re too busy being the main character in their life.
Here’s the study that brought this to light:
In one experiment, participants were asked to wear an embarrassing t-shirt (think Barry Manilow levels of cringe) into a crowded room.
They were then asked: “How many people do you think noticed your shirt?”
Their answer? Around 50%.
Reality? Only 25% noticed.
The takeaway?
You’re not being judged as much as you think you are.
In fact, most people barely notice.
Here are three ways to use this effect:
Start posting. That cringe you feel? It’s mostly in your head. Most people will scroll past—and the right ones will lean in.
Speak up in the meeting. Nobody’s tracking your ums and ahs. They’ll remember the courage it took to raise your hand.
Stop obsessing over perfect. It’s better to be visible than invisible. Done is better than flawless.
BONUS: Flip the script. If everyone’s too busy thinking about themselves...
you’re free to take risks, try things, and grow!
The spotlight isn’t on you.
Go make your mark! Live your legend!
No one’s watching as closely as you think.
(And that’s your superpower.)

This week I have something special for you!

You’re smart, your’re driven, and you’re capable.
